Vikki lost 51 pounds. She adopted a Ketogenic diet and enlisted the help of a friend who is a personal trainer. At 47 years old, her motivation is to be an active grandmother for her young grandson and have as many years with him as she can.
I’m 47 years old, and I’ve been here before. However, this time it’s different. For the first time in my life, I’ve changed my relationship with food, and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.
I’ve lost 51 pounds in 6 months, and the only motivation I have is that I want to be healthier for my 3-month old grandson. I want to take him to amusement parks, and actually be able to keep up with him. I also want as many years as I can possibly have with him.
I’ve adopted a Ketogenic lifestyle, and I eat strictly for fuel. I count macronutrients daily and workout with a personal trainer (both in-person and virtually). I drink half a gallon of water during the workweek and a gallon a day whenever I’m off from work.
What are your daily macronutrient goals?
My daily net carb allowance is 20 net carbs. My fat goal is 122 grams, and my protein is 98 grams. My caloric intake goal is 1573. I track my macros using the Carb Manager App. I log and scan EVERYTHING! This is VERY important!
What did your workout routine consist of?
I began working out by walking across a 2-mile suspension bridge near my home once a week. Shortly after that, I enlisted the help of a female personal trainer who happens to be a good friend of mine. We live in two different states, so she sends me a virtual workout once a week via email to do at my leisure. We meet once a week at a halfway point in a state park. (I work out on average twice a week.)
She gradually increased my resistance training, which I love, so I don’t get frustrated to the point where I want to give up. Her workout routines consist of HIIT workouts, cardio, and strength training. We have never used any machines that you would find in a gym, yet I could see a dramatic change in my physique as we moved from fat burning to body sculpting. I even look snatched from the back. She can be found on Instagram @only1sheruff for anyone who may be interested. She can train virtually, and she offers package deals too.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 291 pounds, and my current weight is 240 pounds. I have a long way to go, but I’ve dropped four sizes by losing almost half of my overall goal weight. This is a journey and a process.
What is your height?
My height is 5’6.
When did you start your journey?
I started my weight loss journey on June 28, 2020.
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
Surgery was never an option for me because I wanted to learn discipline, which I did. I broke my goal weight down so it won’t be overwhelming, and it’s working like a charm.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
I learned that the scale doesn’t tell the whole story. I invested in a body composition scale. Even if my overall weight plateaus 2-4 weeks at a time, I can see my fat percentage consistently decreasing and my muscle mass increasing. That makes a huge difference in keeping me motivated since muscle weighs more than fat, yet it’s leaner. (which means LOTS of lost inches!) I went from a size 22/24 (3x) to a 14/16 (X/L or 1X). Recently, I’ve been able to fit a size 12 (L), depending on the style.
What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight?
Do it for you. You owe it to yourself to be the happiest and healthiest version of yourself. To fully commit to your weight loss journey, you must first overcome the mental blocks that caused you to become overweight in the first place. Weight loss is mental.
You can not begin your journey until you are absolutely ready. Not a moment before. Once something inside of you clicks, and you are no longer happy with the person you see in the mirror, then and only then will you fully commit. You can be healthy, big, and beautiful, all the while loving yourself. You can be as confident as it gets. However, once that stops, that’s when you’ll know you’re ready.
