Transformation of the Day: Tyra lost 60+ pounds. This mom of three daughters would run into people she knew very well, but they didn’t recognize her due to her weight gain. She reached out to friends and relatives for inspiration and joined a boot camp program that has given her the direction she needed.
What was your motivation?
I became motivated when I realized that I was bigger than I had ever been in my entire life. When I would run into people I knew very well, I’d be excited to see them but they didn’t recognize me because I had put on so much weight. I knew I had to make my mind up, stop making excuses, and make a change.
What inspired you to keep going when you wanted to give up?
Results are motivating. Weighing in weekly was encouraging and help me to keep going. Not only that, but I witnessed so many other people transform, and that inspired me to stay focused and keep going.
How did you change your eating habits?
This was a process for me, as food was one of my biggest challenges before changing my lifestyle. I would eat what I wanted, when I wanted, and however much I wanted. Once I joined BKM Fitness Bootcamp, I received a meal plan which I followed. I also received direction from my trainer, who would modify the meal plan based on my weight loss.
We weigh in every week. I didn’t think I would ever get out of 180s. I was getting so frustrated to the point that I wanted to throw in the towel. I cut out meat for a very short time and ate just fruits and veggies.
How did you start working out?
When I began my workout journey, I was nervous. I honestly didn’t think I could do it. I’m over 40 years old (44 to be exact.) I have three daughters, ages 19, 16, and 2 (yes 2). I reached out to several people who have journeys that have inspired me. They told me to meet them at the gym at 4:30 in the morning. Well, not to make excuses, but I’m usually up at that time (especially with my baby), but not up to go to the gym.
One friend of mine didn’t live close enough to me for us to work out together, so we tried FaceTime and text messages. That lasted about 2-3 days, if that. I wanted to lose weight badly but didn’t see how I could fit exercise into my schedule.
My cousins, who’s transformation journey inspired me, invited me to visit their gym. They both lost close to 80 pounds. I went to visit their gym one night, and it was intimidating at first. It was Way Back Wednesday spin night. The music was so lit. It made me want to dance on the bike that I could barely move on. Everyone looked like they were having so much fun, and I wanted to have fun too.
Now, I absolutely love my gym. The people there are like a family. My trainer is personable and holds everyone accountable.
How often did you workout?
I started working out three days a week. Now, I go every day, often twice a day.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was over 200 pounds. I stopped looking at the scale after I saw 213 pounds. My current weight is 140 pounds.
What is your height?
5’2″
When did you start your journey?
March 2019
How long did your transformation take?
About 9.5 months
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
Discipline and consistency are two integral parts of my journey. Once I understood discipline and consistency, it helped with my transformation. Also, I know there is no way I could do this alone. I need accountability.
What advice do you have for people who want to lose weight?
Don’t ever quit, and don’t ever give up. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s.
Find an accountability partner(s) and encourage each other. Share your struggles and successes together.
