What was your motivation?
I needed a change in outcome. They say, “If you want a different result, you have to do things differently.” I got to the point where I was ready to sow the seeds that would give me the harvest of health I desired.
I was motivated to go vegetarian for three reasons:
- My Weight, Physical Appearance, and Lack of Confidence – I didn’t feel good energy-wise, but I also didn’t feel good or confident in my clothes. I wasn’t comfortable seeing my belly that size. I was self-conscious and didn’t want to wear the clothes I had as they didn’t fit anymore or highlighted the size of my belly. My weight kept fluctuating, and I was tired of the fluctuation and decided I had to make a change and focus on my nutrition.
- Painful Period Cramps – I have had horrible period cramps since high school, and I knew, based on research and testimonials, that changing my eating habits and nutrition could give me the relief I desired.
- My Father’s Life as a Diabetic – I grew up seeing my father injecting himself regularly because he had Diabetes. He eventually had a stroke which left him paralyzed and bedridden for ten years until he died. I am adamant that I do not want that for myself. I am proactive and intentional in my wellness approach, so I do not repeat my father’s life.
What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
My Why is strong. I know why I started, so that keeps me focused and grounded. I also have Hope and Faith in the Universal Law of Nature: You reap what you sow. Hence, I am sowing seeds that will allow me to reap a harvest of good health and vitality. I am eating and living to fight disease, not feed disease. I am also inspired to keep going when I see and feel the progress I have made.
How did you change your eating habits?
I took a gradual approach to my vegetarian transition. I started by not eating meat once a week. Then I moved to not eating meat twice a week, and so on, until I was no longer eating meat.
Eventually, I subtracted other unhealthy processed foods, dairy, and sugar. For my 40th Birthday, I decided to do a 40 Days Raw Challenge and invited my social media community to join me. The results of those who participated were phenomenal. Now, I follow a primarily Raw Food Diet, which consists of coconut water, fruit, leafy greens, vegetables, and raw nuts and seeds that are pre-soaked for 12 hours before use.
A Raw Food Diet means that the foods and juices consumed have never been cooked or heated over the temperature of 104–118°F. We use five food preparation methods: Juice, Blend, Soak, Sprout, and Dehydrate. I occasionally have cooked plant foods, but I am about 95% compliant, so I would be considered a High Raw Vegan.
What is your workout routine?
I currently do walks and sprints as part of my daily morning routine. But on my journey, I have also included resistance training, body weight exercise, HIIT, climbing, yoga, pilates, and dancehall dancing.
What was your starting weight? Approximately 190 pounds
What is your current weight? Approximately 140 pounds
What is your height? 5 ft, 5.5 inches tall
When did you start your journey? January 2019.
How long did your transformation take?
I’m not quite sure, but I started seeing and feeling progress within a year of changing my diet. In terms of transformation, I would say maybe 2 years.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
I reap what I sow. I must take accountability for all my actions and habits. When I consciously eat foods that I know cause, worsen or prolong disease, I am using my mouth and fork to dig my own grave.
What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES! If you want to get rid of unhealthy belly fat and prevent lifestyle diseases, avoid refined and added sugar, overly processed and fried foods, animal meat, dairy, alcohol, salt, oil, trans fat, and refined & processed carbs.
There is power in the compound effect. Small steps daily in the right direction will take you wherever you want to go. Anything you want to achieve in life will take 3 steps:
- A decision to change
- A daily commitment to habits that will move you in the direction of the change you desire
- Faith, hope, patience and perseverance to not give up
