Transformation of the Day: Soraya lost 22 pounds. She was active and fit in high school, but the stress of college life led to overeating, a lack of exercise and weight gain. She took action by tracking her macros, eating healthy food and working out. Now, this college senior is a certified personal trainer. Check out her story.
It has been quite a journey. When I was in high school, I was playing soccer and exercising regularly. Just 2 years later in college, I completely lost control of my life. School work was overwhelming, and I couldn’t get into a good rhythm. I stayed up late, neglected exercising, overate at crazy hours of the day, and became someone I didn’t want to be.
One day, I looked in the mirror and realized that I had changed for the worst and if I didn’t do anything about it, it would only get worse. Enough was enough. I dedicated myself to transforming
my life. I started by exercising 4 times a week. Then, I began meal prepping, eating healthier foods, and here I am today. Now, I’m a certified personal trainer, business owner and senior in college. I’m in the best shape of my life.
How did you change your eating habits?
I cut out fast food and started cooking my own meals. These meals included more lean meat (turkey and chicken), more vegetables and more whole grain carbohydrates (quinoa, wheat pasta, wheat bread, etc.) I also counted macros, which helped me stay on track for losing a minimum of 2 pounds each week. Macronutrient tracking was a huge part of the process for me.
What did your workout routine look like?
I did only 10 minutes of cardio to warm up, on the treadmill for example, and the rest of my workout was weightlifting.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
I weighed about 140 pounds and now I weigh 118-120 pounds. My height is 5’2″.
When did you start your journey?
In January 2016, I started working out regularly. In June 2016, I started changing my nutrition and continued to workout.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
When we take care of our bodies, our bodies take care of us. Our bodies allow us to move more freely, enjoy higher levels of energy, and ultimately be functional and feel happy about ourselves.
What advice would you share with women who want to lose weight?
It all starts with your mindset. Once I decided that enough was enough, I never went back… only forward. The best thing you can do is start your journey, and remember that it is a journey, not a race. Your wildest dreams are possible if you put your mind to it. Mind over matter!
