Sophia lost 37 pounds. Diabetes runs in her family, and she saw her mom suffer from the disease for years. After she was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in May of this year, it was time for a lifestyle change. She switched to sugar-free and low carb foods and worked out consistently. Her A1C has improved, and she’s on track to get off Diabetes medication completely.
What was your motivation?
In May of this year, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Even though my mom and several other people in my family have Diabetes, it was sort of a shock to me. I became determined to reverse it or at least get things under control.
For years I watched my mom suffer and take insulin shots. Hearing the doctor say, “You have Diabetes.” horrified me. I immediately started researching healthier alternatives to the foods I love to eat and joined a Diabetes group for different recipes.
One of my biggest motivational factors was seeing my A1C go from 8.1 to 6.1 in a matter of months (making me officially pre-diabetic and no longer a full-fledged diabetic). I’m looking forward to being completely off of the medication I’m taking. My next appointment is next month, so I plan to be in beast mode to see even better results.
How did you change your eating habits?
I’ve always been big on sweets, so finding foods that are sugar-free and low carb was a must. I’m also a cook at heart. I’m from South Carolina, so soul food was a must, lol. I had to revamp some of my recipes to make them low carb and healthier.
Tell us about your workout routine?
I began working out at least three or four times a week. On my high energy days, I will power walk to the gym, work out, and then make the walk home my cool down.
What is your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 249 pounds, and I currently weigh 212 pounds.
What is your height?
I am 5’4″.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
My biggest lesson is that the key to weight loss is making a complete lifestyle change—no fad dieting.
What advice would you like to share?
There will be good days and bad days, but the critical part is continuing your journey no matter what.
