Transformation of the Day: Sonya lost 59 pounds. She is an RN and a mother of 3. The stress of working, making ends meet, finishing school and being a mom led to stress and poor eating habits. After getting divorced at 30 and becoming a single mom, she was able to find the strength within to change her mindset and create a new lifestyle. Check out her journey.
I’m a Registered Nurse with a natural passion for helping others through my spirit of pure joy, love and inspiration. I’ve struggled with my weight since the age of 24. I became a nurse and had two C-Sections (one with a set of twins) and within less then a year. At the time, I was married and fell into a Great Depression trying to work, make ends meet, finish school, and be a mom to 2 infants and a toddler! I lost all my hair from stress and unhealthy habits. Also, I was working nothing less then 120 hours a pay check!
At the age of 30, I got divorced from an 11 year marriage and found my strength in the struggles of being a single mom. It changed my views on life itself! As the daughter of a very well respected Pastor and family, I was losing my mind. The only comfort I had was making my sick and dying patients and residents smile.
One night while working a travel assignment in ICU, a 40 year old patient of mine was preparing to be discharged home. He went to the bathroom prior to leaving the hospital and died instantly of a Vagal Stimulated heart attack. That did it for ME! After 16 years in Healthcare, my patients were getting younger in terms of those diagnosed with heart attacks and high blood pressure. This happened in February 2017 and I weighed about 242 pounds at the time. (height: 5’6″)
I started by changing my eating habits. Less fried foods, sweets, bread and coffee. More water, fruits and baked meats. It was a roller coaster! I didn’t go to the gym, because I was still working. I dropped my first 23 pounds with food changes alone!
Then, I slowly started watching other black women via social media and thought, “I want that body! I can do that too!” I started doing more cardio. Then, I added weights and more walking. A few months went by and I weighed 210 pounds by the Summer. I workout 5 Days a week!
Now, I weigh 183 pounds and I’m looking to achieve higher goals. The change in my diet has balanced out my emotions, attitude, chemical imbalances and hormones. Consistency and patience is the Key!
I hit a plateau and got very discouraged for a while. Your state of the mind must stay positive and you must be determined to succeed, despite the struggles. It all starts in the mind first. Then, you have to get out and do what makes you uncomfortable. Get up at 5am. Stop eating after 7pm and lying down after the meal. Go 5 miles instead of 3. Buy cute workout clothes and tighter fitting ones. Take lots of selfies to remind yourself of the journey. Most of all, remember that Black Girl Magic that God predestined and placed within you before the foundations of the world. Use even the flaws to be the best that you can be!
I opened up a weight loss company called Opulent Bodies INC to give women and men like myself that extra push through noninvasive procedures, such as Laser Lipo! I started seeing the awesome results and it pushed me to get into a routine of working out more and eating cleaner! Laser Lipo was a great boost, but changing in my eating habits is how I’ve kept the weight off. I’m also a Herbalife distributor, which is an awesome shake program!
