Shanethea lost 20 pounds. She started her fitness journey because she wanted to invest in herself and see what would happen if she was dedicated and focused on her goals. Cutting out junk food, cooking more meals at home, and working out has paid off.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
My motivation for starting my fitness journey was getting tired of how I looked and wanting to dedicate myself to making a change. I am someone who has been working out on and off for years but never stuck with it. I would fall off after 2-3 months. This time, I wanted to invest in myself and put in the effort.
My inspiration when I wanted to give up was the many fitness women I follow on Instagram. They post inspiring messages about not giving up and about trusting the process.
How did you change your eating habits?
I changed my eating habits by cutting out snacks and junk food for the first six weeks of my journey: no cookies, cakes, chocolate, or ice cream (Things I loved and overindulged in). Before I started making changes, I was snacking between every meal every day—no bueno. I started eating more fruit, veggies, salads, and nuts. I also started drinking a lot of water.
I cooked my meals at home. It helps a ton when you know what and how much is going into your food. I did not follow a specific diet plan or program.
What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
My workout routine consisted of weight training and cardio at the gym. I started with three days a week and later progressed to 4 days a week. Now since the pandemic, I have been working out from home 4-5 days a week. Gyms have still not reopened here in New York.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
I don’t know what my exact starting weight was, but it was between 175-180 pounds. My current weight is approximately 160 pounds.
What is your height?
My height is 5 feet, 7.5 inches tall.
When did you start your journey?
I started my fitness journey in October 2019, and I am still in my transformation process.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
The biggest lesson I have learned so far is that this is MY journey, and I should not compare it to anyone else’s. Everybody is different. Not everyone gets the same results within the same time frame. Instead of comparing myself to the many beautiful women I see on social media, I compare who I was and how I looked yesterday with today—working on being the best version of me.
What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
It will take patience, consistency, and discipline. Don’t give up. Keep going! Motivation will not always be there. That’s where discipline and good habits will kick in and be the driving force to get you to your goals. Giving up will not get you the results you want. Each workout puts you one step closer to your goals.
