Sarafina lost 45 pounds. After years of being overweight and feeling unhealthy, she found herself in a state of depression. She knew that she would need to commit to a new lifestyle to take control of her health. The Keto diet and working out in the gym was the perfect combination for her.
I’m a hard working 24-year-old. Growing up, I was never a healthy kid. I remember gym class being the worst part of school for me. I was overweight and pretty unhealthy for most of my life. It wasn’t until I went into a depressive phase back in Summer 2018 that I had decided to put my foot down. I finally decided, after 23 years, that I do love myself. To prove that to myself, I knew I had to do something I had never done before.
Commitment is something I always struggled with. Whether it
came to relationships or jobs, I was never really able to fully commit to anything without giving up. Being afraid of rejection is another thing that had held me back. Being so insecure and full of doubt, I became depressed. I felt stuck, alone, and I felt there was no way out. Deep down, I knew that wasn’t true. I always had a hopeful spirit. Thanks to the Lord looking out for me, he brought me out of that depression.
I decided to eat healthy, so I tried the Keto diet. By week two, I was feeling great and kept it going. I decided to sign up for the gym. Despite being scared of being judged, I pushed myself every day, especially on the days when I didn’t feel motivated enough. I just knew it was something I had to do.
I gradually cut off carbs. First, I stopped eating rice and pasta. I slowly cut off processed foods/carbs and sugar as well. I loved to have coffee every morning, sometimes three times a day. I always got a double-double so getting used to having it with no sugar took some time. I now almost hate the taste of sugar. My daily carb goal, in the beginning, was 20-25 grams per day. Now it’s around 30-35 grams a day.
I started Keto in Dec 2018, about a month before I began working out. Once I got in the gym, my main focus was on cardio. I gradually worked my way up to lifting weights.
I dieted on and off for years, but I haven’t looked back since I started Keto. However, I do have occasional cheat days.
Here I am, eight months later and 45 pounds down. My starting weight was 210 pounds. Today I am 165 pounds at 5’8″. I’ve gone from a size 13 to a size 9 (sometimes size 7 if I can squeeze into it, lol.)
Believing in myself was the first step. I am so glad I didn’t give up
then and certainly don’t plan to now. Being healthy has forever changed my life, and I’m thankful for that.
Throughout this journey, I’ve learned that it’s harder to stand still and complain than it is to take a simple step towards progress. If you’re going to sit and complain about something without being willing to put in the work that it takes to solve the issue, you might as well not speak.
You must have an open mind. You must be ready and willing to put in the effort. Trust me, with a little consistency and patience you will see results. Had I just said, “Oh no, it’s too hard.”, without even trying, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Keto was what I chose to do, but you can choose another route. You just have to make minor sacrifices. In the end, you’ll thank yourself for doing it.
