What was your motivation?
What motivated me was the passing of my mom. She had a terrible battle with cancer. Also, when my mother was diagnosed, I learned that we have a family history of cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and high cholesterol. Learning all of this about my family history was overwhelming because those are the top factors for people dying these days. I’ve battled with anemia my entire life and knowing that everyone on my mother’s side of the family died from these illnesses truly scared me.
At the time, I was in my thirties, and I still wanted to have my own family. I knew that I had to resort back to healthy habits and not allow myself to get buried in the emotions of dealing with the loss of my mom. It wasn’t easy, and I’m still taking it day by day. However, I knew I had to make changes; otherwise, I felt I was next.
What inspired you to start your weight loss journey?
What truly inspired me to start my journey was seeing pictures of how I looked at my mother’s funeral. I honestly couldn’t recognize myself. I was shocked at how much watching her go thru her battle with cancer day by day had affected me. I was fooling myself because it was affecting my health tremendously, and everyone could see as my body started to change.
I come from a healthy family. My father is a herbalist, and he’s into natural living. We ate a lot of homegrown fruit and veggies and home-cooked healthy meals growing up. I was also into sports and always in some school activity growing up. However, my mother’s illness was something we didn’t expect at all. My mom was my best friend, my mentor, my support, my biggest cheerleader, and a phenomenal mom. She is one of the strongest women I’ve ever known. I suffered the loss of all my three brothers growing up, but the loss of my mom hit me the hardest.
So seeing how much weight I gained in a short time, I realized that everything I knew about health and fitness growing up had been entirely thrown aside because the emotions were overwhelming. Seeing myself in pictures and videos is what truly motivated and inspired me to start my journey. I no longer recognized myself. I needed to heal and be able to recognize myself again.
How did you change your eating habits?
I went back to eating what I knew growing up; plenty of fresh veggies, fruit, whole grains, and lean protein. I did the same things I tell my clients and members based on my nutritional structure of how to properly fuel your body with the key essentials that the body needs. I increased my water intake since I was working out daily. I also went back to cooking, which was another passion I had and started to create healthy recipes.
I stopped consuming sugar, processed foods, fast food, and I stopped drinking alcohol as that was the demon in my diet. These unhealthy foods were my go-to when dealing with my mothers battle with cancer.
What did your workout consist of?
My workout was HIIT/Resistance Training. I worked out 5-7 days a week. I didn’t like the gym when I started my journey because I had gained over 100lbs, and it was a lot of weight to move around. As I began to see my body change daily, it made me never want to skip the gym. I knew that each time I went into the gym, I was changing my body, and that pushed me to make it part of my daily regimen.
How long did your transformation take?
I started seeing results within the first month in the gym. I dropped body fat and dropped 1-2 dress sizes. I was able to accomplish this by working with a trainer I met at Planet Fitness by the name of King of the Fire.
I tried to do it on my own and wasn’t successful as I was still dealing with the loss of my mom. Doing the workout regimen Fire designed was not only easy but so doable and something I could commit to daily. Seeing the changes made it easier to stay consistent and documenting my journey was key.
I met King of the Fire, and he showed me a side-by-side of one of his clients. I was blown away at how amazing she looked, and he said, “I can do the same for you.” I wasn’t excited about the gym, but I was ready for the challenge. At the time, he was on his own journey to gain more muscle. So I provided my nutritional expertise to help him gain muscle and grow while he offered his fitness expertise to help me drop the excess body fat with his workout regimen. Following his workout regimen while I committed to my nutritional regimen worked.
Fire trained me 5-6 days a week. As my body started to change, and Fire’s body began to change, people began to come up to him in the gym to get training. We decided to use one of his new clients to test out our plan and married our ideas and expertise together. In a matter of weeks, that client started to transform, and more and more people wanted to work with us. That’s when we decided to create the Fitness on Fire Online Training Program.
I fully started to focus on Fitness on Fire and the members of the program. That was my number one priority, so I set my own fitness goals aside to focus on our members. If I had it to do all over again, I still would have done it the same because helping these women and men transform gave me a new purpose, a reason to share my knowledge and expertise and create a platform for us to show how we help people become the healthier and fitter versions of themselves.
Fire breaks down how the body works, body fat, and the tools needed to transform your body naturally. I teach members how to fuel their bodies for a healthy and fit lifestyle properly. We provide support, guidance, accountability. With us, our clients are working with individuals who know what they are going thru as we have own journeys to show it can be done! This program is different because both Fire & myself love what we do!
It brings me great pleasure and fulfillment to help everyone change their lifestyles and even help some save their lives. We have helped women who struggled with health problems from high blood pressure to diabetes, cholesterol, PCOS, and hypo & hyper thyroids. Also, women who struggled to get pregnant and with the help of our program they were able to conceive. All these positive outcomes kept both Fire and myself motivated to keep pushing our program forward. Fitness on Fire Online Training has become our life and our baby. Every day, we think of more and more ways to make the program better and teach people how to achieve their ultimate fitness goals.
I understand truly what each of these women is going thru, from the emotions, struggles, and daily challenges. So I was able to guide and teach them how to overcome these challenges and put themselves first. As I was going thru the journey with the members, unfortunately, I got hit with another overwhelming challenge when I learned that my father was diagnosed with cancer. It is the same terminal cancer as my mother, so that was another situation I wasn’t prepared for. Dealing with my father’s current diagnosis help me to shift gears as I didn’t want what happened when my mother passed to happen again. I have stayed more focused so I can be healthy, strong, and fit.
I utilized the gym to help me deal with my fathers diagnosis. I know my father doesn’t want me to give up on my health and is incredibly proud of the success we’ve had with transforming members on the program, so that is even more motivation to help me keep going. As he is fighting for his life, I am fighting to continue my journey and help every one of our members do the same.
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
Understand that it’s a journey. What you put into it is precisely what you will get out of it. You have to visualize yourself at that goal from day 1. You have to know that it’s a lifestyle change, not just something that you do, reach a short term goal, and go backward. It has to be a full lifestyle transformation.
