Weight Loss Story: Nancy lost 40 pounds. This proud mom of 2 was faced with the possibility of developing hypertension. Knowing that this ailment, along with diabetes, is a part of her family history and a silent killer in the black community, she knew that she had to take action. Here is what she shared with us about her journey…
Being fat Sucks! My starting weight was 220 pounds and I am 5’6″ tall. Earlier this year (in 2015), I went for my annual check up. My doctor told me that I’m borderline for hypertension. I was also told that needed to lose weight. We all know hypertension is a silent killer in the black community. It also runs in my family, and so does diabetes. I didn’t want to be 32 years old and taking meds everyday.
A new gym was opening in my area, but the bad side was that it didn’t open until September… and it was August at the time. So, I made small changes. I started walking for exercise and stopped drinking sodas. When the gym finally opened, started going to the group training classes, 5 days a week. I also changed my eating habits; no salt, no bread, and no sweets. I now eat fruit, veggies, baked chicken/turkey, brown rice and I drink lots of water.
It took me 4 months to start seeing progress. I now weigh 180 pounds and I’m down 4 pants sizes. Yayyy! My advice to others: Take dieting one day at a time. It’s a process that your mind has to be ready for.
