Makita lost 73 pounds. Discipline, exercise, and clean eating changed her life. Her motivation came out of her struggles with infertility and her desire to be a healthy and happy mom. She shed the weight and has worked for several years to keep it off for good.
What was your motivation?
My motivation to lose weight was because I was tired of complaining about what I was unwilling to change. I’ve struggled with weight my whole life. I went through nine years of infertility and finally got pregnant via IVF with twins. However, I went on to lose both babies. I ate for comfort and got to my highest weight of 230 pounds. I decided that if I could not control getting pregnant, I could control my fitness and weight loss.
What inspired you when you wanted to give up?
I wanted to get my body in the best shape to carry the child that I wanted so much to conceive. I wanted to feel confident and in good health. It was the one thing that I knew I could control.
How did you change your eating habits?
I began to research the Clean Eating regime and fell in love. I love that you can eat a wide variety of foods that fuel your body without restricting a food group. I focused on portion control and exercise, and I begin to lose weight. I educated myself on the value of nutrition. Eventually, I became a fitness instructor and weight loss coach.
What foods did you stop or start eating?
I started eating more vegetables, lean meat, and fruit. I learned to prepare healthy food in ways that made it delicious. I also focused on eating less processed foods. I started to feel amazing.
I lost weight using the Clean Eating Principles – eating less processed foods and eating more whole foods. I practiced calorie counting but later switched to portion control and high protein meals.
What did your workout routine look like?
I work out six days a week. I teach dance fitness classes three times a week and strength train with a trainer three times a week.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 230 pounds, and my current weight is 157 pounds.
What is your height?
5’7″
When did you start your journey?
My journey has been continuous. My transformation started around 2012 when I got serious about change.
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
NO
How long did your transformation take?
I lost 70 pounds. I finally got pregnant with my first child, and I lost 40 pounds. Two years later, I got pregnant with my second son, and I gained 60 pounds. It took me about a year to lose weight this final time. It has been quite a journey. I am sure I’ve lost over 150 pounds altogether.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned?
You have to remain consistent despite the setbacks. Find your WHY! I do it for my boys. They deserve to have a happy and healthy mother.
What advice do you have for people who want to lose weight?
You have to be willing to stay consistent, get support if needed, and find a plan that works for you. Every plan is not for everybody. Be willing to do your research before starting a plan.
