Transformation of the Day: Laverne lost 42 pounds. After learning that the intense knee pain she experienced was due to weight, she decided to commit to a long term, lifestyle change. She did her research, make straight forward changes to her eating habits and worked out regularly. Her hard work has paid off. Check out her story.
Hello, I’ve lost a total of 42 pounds. I really got serious about my weight loss goals at the end of September 2015. I knew that I needed a change when I woke up out my sleep due to pain in my left knee! I couldn’t raise it at all. I thought I had a blood clot or something. I started thinking about the worse case scenario. When I got to Urgent Care, my knee was swollen. The X-rays came back saying that there was no injury. The issue was that I was getting to heavy! This opened my eyes and I said no more. I wanted to be healthy. I wanted to be here for my kids and my family. I wanted to fit into all those beautiful clothes that I had just sitting in my closet that I’ve been hoping to get back into one day.
So, I closed my eyes and asked God to help me with this journey. I started by doing research on how I could change my life. I would also read stories on Black Women Losing Weight’s blog for inspiration. I knew this couldn’t be just a quick fix situation. No one or two week diets for me. This is a lifetime lifestyle change that I had to make.
I started walking and jogging in my complex everyday. After the first 10 pounds came off, my knee never hurt again! I started doing portion control, eating more vegetables, more fish and more chicken. I started making healthy Shakeology smoothies for breakfast or a veggie omelette. I don’t eat red meat to much. I also started drinking fresh lemon water thru out the day, everyday. I still have a cheat day sometimes, but I get right back at it the next day. Once it started getting cold outside, I got back in the gym and I workout for at least a hour or more, 4 to 5 days a week. I do a lot of cardio and I use the treadmill and elliptical machines. I also use the weight training machines.
I realize that this is a life commitment! It’s a lifestyle change that I had to make for me. I know that I am a strong woman and that I had to do this. It’s not easy but I knew what I had to do to be healthy, so I SNATCHED my life back by setting goals for myself and completing them! If I can do it, you can do it. That is what I tell people all the time.

I would start with just getting up!! Get up get walking!! Also invest in a Fitbit! It will keep u moving & u can compete with friends who also have one. There week day hustle challenges, daily & weekend. That’s one of the things that keep me moving as well! U can do it!’

Very inspiring! You look great!! I am the same way – looking at these great stories on the site and just amazed. Yet, I haven’t put forth a whole lot of effort in my own weight loss goal. I know it has to be done, even just 20lbs to start would do. I recently developed asthma and I think it has to do with my weight because I never had it before. I also have a family line of high blood pressure and diabetes and I don’t want to be next. Looking at your story about your (literal) wake up call is making me think harder about my health. Thanks and congrats!
