Transformation of the Day: Lauren lost 88 pounds. She put in the work by working out and adopting healthy eating habits. The catalyst for her journey was having an anxiety attack that felt very much like a heart attack. She is determined to be a healthy mom for her son and listen to what her body needs.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
My son and my health motivated me to gain control of my weight. I had an anxiety attack that, at the time, felt very much like a heart attack. All I could think about was my son and not wanting to die. It was time to heed the warnings from my body and change directions. The desire to be a better version of myself pushed me to stay the course during the difficult moments.
How did you change your eating habits?
Initially, I stopped eating all meat but eventually added seafood and chicken back into my diet. I increased the amount of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and spring water in my diet. Instead of sodas and sugary drinks, I started sipping on sparkling waters and herbal teas with honey or agave. Changing my eating habits led to me cooking more and eating out less.
What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
Hiking became my primary “workout routine.” If I wasn’t hiking, I was walking in my neighborhood or going to the fitness center in my complex about 3-4 times a week. Currently, my workout routine consists mainly of yoga and dancing.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 227 pounds. My current weight is 139 pounds.
What is your height?
I’m 5’4″.
When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I started my journey in 2017, and my transformation took about 1 ½ years.
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
The biggest lesson that I have learned so far is that I can be my biggest ally or enemy, depending on my mindset. Ally is much better!
What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
My first piece of advice for women who want to lose weight is to be kind to themselves first and foremost! Secondly, know that you will be faced with moments that will require self-accountability. It can be difficult at first, but it is necessary for the transformation to be long-term.
The last piece of the puzzle that has been beneficial in my journey has been writing. JOURNAL, JOURNAL, JOURNAL!!! I can’t express enough how freeing it is to get the internal chatter out on paper! In your difficult moments, write about the feelings. Why do I want to eat right now? What is really bothering me at this moment? Will this food truly make me feel better? Whatever it is, write it out! You are stronger than you know and are never alone!
