Update Dec 2019: Shout out to KiKi. She has released 90 pounds!
Transformation of the Day: Kiki lost 65 pounds. Being a healthy example for her kids was her motivation. She focused on nutrition, and making healthier choices. Her workouts took place in the gym and outside in her neighborhood. Check out her story.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
My motivation to get into shape was my kids. After I had my son, I had no energy. I always hid behind my clothes and away from cameras. I hated the person I saw in the mirror.
There were a lot of times on this journey I wanted to give up and say “The hell with it.” However, I didn’t want my kids to see their mom give up. How am I going to instill in them how to never give up when I gave up on something like nutrition?!
How did you change your eating habits?
Changing eating habits is ALWAYS a struggle in the beginning. You can be the most determined person possible, but I guarantee you’ll get discouraged at one point with your eating habits. The key is to change a little at a time. If you change everything at once (especially those who eat horribly) your guaranteed to fail at some point. Changing your eating habits is not just a one and done thing. It’s a journey. It’s a lifestyle change! You are going to fall off, but getting back on track is what will keep you from completely failing.
I’ve been a creature of habit my whole life. I’m from the south, and we don’t eat healthy. We put a pound of sugar in a glass of Kool-Aid, lol! I had to sit down and go thru everything I eat and binge! I cut gluten slowly. That was a struggle! I love bread and pasta, but because I have PCOS gluten triggers some of my attacks. Instead of regular bread, I bought 100% whole wheat bread. Later on, I switched to Ezekiel bread. I went from regular pasta to whole wheat pasta, to veggie pasta, and now zoodles. It’s a change, yes, but one I needed to take. I did the same with fried chicken. Instead of having it fried, I’d grill it or bake it. Instead of regular potatoes, I eat sweet potatoes in moderation. Did I tell you I like starch too?! I love rice, but I had to get to where I have it in moderation with more veggies than rice to offset the starch.
I also started to corporate Herbalife products. At first I wasn’t a believer, but I began to see more change and I stuck with it. Now, I am an Online Heath Coach with the company, so I can help others reach their personal health goals.
Tell us about your workout routine.
My workouts weren’t hardcore at all. It was “light work.” I’d choose my battles wisely. I HATE CARDIO! I’d start by walking on the treadmill to get my heart rate up (about 5 mins). Then, I’d do a light jog for 2 minutes. From there, I would go to weights because that’s where the difference in results lies. I did low to medium weights with high reps. I would max my weight once a month to see where my strength is. I would only work out at the gym 1-2 times a week. Believe it or not, something as little as walking around the neighborhood for fresh air is exercise. Instead of driving to the store, try walking that mile instead.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 241 pounds. It may have been higher, but at 241 lbs I stopped looking at my weight at the doctor’s office. My current weight is 176 pounds! My height is 5’5″.
How long did your transformation take?
I originally started my journey after having my son via C-section in 2013. I later had my daughter and restarted my journey around 12 months ago. It’s taken me 9 months to lose my weight. (no weight loss surgery involved.)
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
You will rise and fall in this journey, but it’s about getting back up and pushing forward. Never giving up is what counts!
What advice would you share with women who want to lose weight?
Stick with it, even when you don’t want to, and even if it’s just baby steps. Some improvement is better than no effort.
