Featured Story: In 6 months, Kenyetta dropped 4 dress sizes, reduced 37 inches in overall body size and a saw 14% drop in body fat. She did this while taking care of her 2 young children, working a 9 to 5 and going to school. Awesome! She is a client of Body Refined, Inc. Owner and master trainer Kurt Dixon interviewed her about her journey to greater fitness and health.
What was your light bulb moment that made you decide to lose weight? Did you think you were overweight?
My light bulb moment was when my doctor told me that my cholesterol and blood pressure was sky high and if I didn’t get them under control I might not live long enough to see my children grow. I was in a place in my life where all I knew was taking care of my kids. I forgot about me and I knew that in order for me to be a good mother I had to make sure I took care of me as well. I knew I gained some weight but I never thought I was overweight”. My clothes started fitting tighter and I when I looked in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself anymore. I was feeling depressed and needed a change. Needless to say when I was told I was obese that was my sign to get my weight under control ASAP.
Have you always been overweight? If not, how long have you been overweight? When did you notice you started to gain weight?
No, I haven’t always been overweight. I’ve been skinny my whole life until I got pregnant with my son and got preeclampsia, I went from 125 lbs to 180 lbs in nine months. I just never lost the weight after that.
Does overweight or obesity run in the family… meaning immediate members: mom, dad, siblings?
Obesity does not run in my family. For the most part everyone in my family is slim. So when family members saw me “big” they were like “what happened to you?!”
Thus far in your journey, has it been difficult… challenging… or what would you call it?
I’ve always been an active/athletic person, so the workouts have been fun. What I did find challenging was changing my eating habits and really paying attention to detail. I had to look at my serving sizes and cut out foods that I had become addicted to.
Are you satisfied w/ where you are now? If not, what more do you want or can you do?
I’m okay where I am. I’m happy that I’m not where I was but I know there is still a lot more work to do to get to where I want to be.
During this process, what have you learned thus far?
I learned that losing weight is not an overnight process. It’s a lifestyle change and I’m loving how I see my body change month after month. Also with this process, I learned a lot about my body and what works for me and what doesn’t.
What advice would you give someone who wants to lose weight?
I would tell them that working with someone who knows what it takes will definitely help them with their journey. It’s a lifestyle change that has to be taken seriously.
How do you feel now vs when you were at your biggest?
I feel much better. I love how my clothes fit, how my face and body have changed. I was once told that the only way to lose my stomach after having two kids (both C-sections) was to get a tummy tuck. After applying my eating and workout plan from Body Refined Inc. My stomach has down and I no longer require surgery.
What kind of support, if any, did you get from family and friends? And in contrast, did you experience any negativity from friends and family?
When starting this journey I didn’t tell too many people because I didn’t know what to expect. I worked with trainers in the past and I didn’t lose the weight so I kept it to myself this time. So, far I have been getting a lot of positive feedback. Family and friends are saying “the old Kenyetta is back”. Some ask “How much more weight are you going to lose? Don’t lose anymore!!” However, they don’t know all the years I lived in this overweight body and what affect it was having on me mentally as well as physically.
Have you ever tried to lose weight before? If so, what was the difference in what you did this time vs other plans or programs you tried before?
I tried to lose weight before and would lose ten pounds and then gain it back. There were times that I would workout with trainers and actually gain weight. So, what I learned is that a proper nutrition plan is the biggest part of losing weight and also tracking everything you eat, daily, pays off in the long run.
How did you end up working w/ Body Refined? What has your experience been like working w/ Body Refined?
A family friend kept on mentioning working out with a Health Coach and how good he was at helping other women lose weight. She showed me some Facebook photos of other clients he worked with and their progress and I was hooked ever since. The family friend and I ended up having Thanksgiving together and I saw her plate and couldn’t believe that she was eating something totally different then everybody else. I looked at my plate and then hers and I was like, “Damn what am I doing eating all this food.” My experience so far has been great. I’m a need to know person and Kurt took the time to answer all my questions and was very detailed with everything. After each meeting I would get a detailed email about my progress and what all we discussed. I told him what foods I liked and he made a plan that met my needs. The workout plans helped me gained my endurance back as well as dropping body fat and I now enjoy my favorite sport track again. I would recommend people to Body Refined but they would have to be a person who is willing to put the time and effort into changing their whole lifestyle for the sake of getting healthy and in-shape. You have to have an open mind and be willing to commit. If not, then Body Refined won’t work for them.
