Transformation of the Day: Jocelin lost 54 pounds. This mom of two wanted to be a healthy, active example for her children. She found out how powerful and effecitve it can be to combine healthy eating with the intense workouts. Check out how she got results.
My name is Jocelin and I’m a mother of two. I’ve worked out regularly in past, but still practiced poor eating habits. Thus, I would only lose 5-10 lbs. I remembered coming back from a beach trip with my friends right after Labor Day and wishing I had more confidence in myself. That’s when I decided to try something different and pair the healthy eating with the intense workouts. I started in September 2014 at 217 pounds, and lost over 50 lbs by June 2015. My current weight is 163 pounds. I am 5 feet, 10 inches tall.
My motivation is my children. I want to play with them without tiring out so fast, and be a good example of how to properly fuel your body. I also love seeing women in fitness and strength competitions. When I had a bad day, I would remind myself that I’m a day closer to my goals, and tell myself to never look back.
I started out by replacing all my liquids with water. Then, I replaced all the processed foods I was eating with starches, vegetables and lean meats. I was never a soda drinker, but the amount of sugar and calories in juice is almost the same amount as you’d find in soda! It was hard at first. Yes, I craved that sugary liquid on more days than I didn’t, but I kept going with a cup of juice maybe once a week. During my first month, I lost 10 pounds.
During the second month, I switched from having bread as my main source of carbs. Instead, I had brown rice and potatoes. I also ate more green veggies, including broccoli and asparagus, and continued eating lean meats. I lost another 10 pounds the second month.
I eat 6 to 7 times a day and manage my portion sizes. No more fast food! I meal prep at home and eat that food throughout the week. My body functions best on a high fat/low carb diet. I’ve given up all red meat since Lent of 2015. Giving up red meat did something to my energy levels and I never went back
I began working out by doing an hour of cardio on the elliptical, 5 times a week. After dropping the first 30, I started lifting weights and running. I started with the basics, like squats, deadlifts, push-ups, bicep curls, etc. Later, I incorporated crossfit exercises, like burpees and power cleans. I kept switching it up to make my workouts fun and challenging. I also met a good friend at the gym and I started running outside. I now run with a group what runs up to 12 miles in a session. It’s so helpful to have people who have the same obsession as you.
Now I workout 5 days a week, with 4 days of weight training, cardio and some crossfit, and one day dedicated to just cardio. I may take a run outside and run up to 10 miles occasionally. I still get up at 4:10AM throughout the weekdays and I wouldn’t want to start my day any other way.
My goal is simple: I want to look as good as I feel and feel as good as I look. I want to keep up with my children, and I want to run them ragged. I want to break barriers, and all the “impossibles.” Once I reach a fitness goal, I create a new one because this journey never stops for me. The hardest part is starting, but the biggest regret is looking back six months later and wishing you started today.
The advice I have for others is that this is a never ending journey. Fitness has no ending. Once you reach a goal, set a new goal so that you don’t stop. Make it fun. Celebrate the small victories. Most importantly, love yourself throughout the process.
