My name is Janalyn, and I’m a 50 year old mother of one. As of today, I have lost 111lbs. The motivation behind my journey to better health was seeing that my choices were not only impacting my life expectancy due to pre-diabetes and high blood pressure, but my choices were impacting my child as well. We hope to lead by example as parents. Loving ourselves shows our children the same.
The Early Years
As a young adult, I was in good physical health. I found the weight packing onto my small frame late in my 20’s. My job caused me to sit in front of a computer for up to 10 hours a day. My lifestyle became more sedentary and combined with bad food choices, this lifestyle resulted in me being morbidly obese in my 40’s.
The Realization
In November 2016, after seeing the physical limitations of weighing approximately 271 pounds at 5’2″, I began researching options that would best suit my situation. I was 48 years old at the time. Having tried numerous weight loss programs in the past, I opted for the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy weight loss surgery. There was a 6-month pre-op period required by my insurance that allowed me to prepare for a permanent change in lifestyle. It is not ever an easy decision, but today I am grateful beyond words for my team who stood with me as embarked on this journey.
During the pre-op period, I was advised to start conditioning myself for an entirely different lifestyle to include protein-focused meals and smaller portions. Using a small salad plate was great then and now.
The Journey Begins
I had surgery on June, 16 2017. For anyone considering surgery, I suggest that you research all options and find what suits you best. The weight loss surgery is a tool, and just like any tool, it must be appropriately utilized. Therefore eating balanced and proper is a must, along with regular exercise.
Post-op you are forced to consider all choices made because you are now working with a stomach the size of a small banana. I learned to choose nutritionally better foods (i.e., lean proteins, vitamin-rich vegetables, and protein-packed meals) Previously, I ate lots of fast food and carbohydrates. I was an over indulging eater when it came to pasta, bread, rice, cakes cookies, pies, etc. These things in moderation can be fine, but too much of anything is never good. Balance is key for me.
I work at home 3-5 days a week. I have a treadmill and a variety of workout equipment that I collected over the years. Immediately after surgery I began walking every day, which was best for me. I slowly incorporated free weights and yoga.
Today
My starting weight was 271 pounds. As of today (9-25-2018), I weigh 160 pounds. I can’t stress enough that your journey to better health is your own. Don’t be discouraged or think it can’t be done at ANY AGE. The results speak for themselves.
For me, this process was not only about physical changes but an emotional, spiritual and psychological awakening of myself. Many of us spend so much of our time being there for others and being entirely selfless. I had to learn that it is ok to be selfish in regards to my health and well being.
Advice
You want to move every day if possible. You don’t have to go to an expensive gym to exercise. Utilize the resources around you. My company has a free gym. They also reimburse for outside gym memberships and specific equipment. Check your benefits as most companies encourage a healthy lifestyle.
Research your options, find what suits you best and surround yourself with positive, encouraging individuals who support your choices. If considering surgery of any kind, ask questions of your health care provider and people who have undergone surgery. Research your insurance requirements as well. Know that this is not a quick fix and that you MUST CHANGE your relationship with food to be successful.
Most of all, enjoy your journey!
