Transformation of the Day: Ifafunke lost 155 pounds. At 330 pounds, the social isolation, physical limitations and health issues she faced were very serious. She looked to God for guidance, joined an overeaters support group and created a plan for success. Over the the course of 2 years, she has truly transformed. Check out how she did it.
What was your motivation?
My motivation was being sick and tired of being sick and tired. Weighing 330 pounds is very isolating. Obese people are often treated poorly by society. “Friends” didn’t want to be seen with me in public and I had a limited pool of people for friendship and dating in general. This forced isolation made me very fearful of the world around me, which in turn made me very angry. I had a”me against the world” attitude.
In addition to the social limitations, the physical limitations were also terrifying. At my highest weight, I could not comfortably fit on public transformation, in small cars or in airplane seats. I was also limited to only wearing wide men’s tennis shoes and going to two stores that carried clothes for plus size women. My knees were damaged. I had to have my gallbladder removed at 20 years old. My feet and back were always sore and the skin on my ankles would break and bleed from stretching and pressure. The social, physical and health ramifications of being overweight were my motivations.
What inspired you when you wanted to give up?
God. I know that God wants me to be happy in this lifetime. Being overweight, unhealthy and isolated were detrimental to my happiness. Also, not wanting to let myself down and being honest about the horrors of being 330 pounds at 5’4″ kept me focused. I did not want to return to the misery. Another inspiration for not giving up was not wanting to let down the people who have supported me in living a healthier life.
How did you change your eating habits?
I joined a group for people who compulsively overeat and asked God to help me in not overeating. I stay away from foods that trigger me, such as cakes, ice cream, cookies, sugar, chips, cheese and certain processed foods. If I start eating these foods, they will be on my mind and I won’t be able to eat a normal amount. I will want to overeat them continuously.
I only eat three meals a day with nothing in between other than coffee, tea and water. No snacks. My meals consist of 4 ounces of protein and two cups of vegetables or a cup of vegetables and a fruit and a serving of fat (one tablespoon of butter or oil or two tables spoons of salad dressing)
What did your workout routines look like?
I work out three times a week for 30 minutes to one hour. My three weekly workouts consist of a night of vigorous dancing, a one hour walk, a Bikram yoga session or an hour at the gym. At the gym, I do 40 minutes cardio, consisting of approx 15 minutes of elliptical, 10 minutes running and speed walking, 10 minutes on the stair master. I also do 20 minutes weight lifting. Throughout the week, I also do 60 squats and 60 bicep curls, everyday to every other day.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 330 pounds. My current weight is 175-180 pounds. I am 5 feet, 4 inches tall. My transformation took about two years, but it is ongoing. I didn’t have surgery, but I am considering skin removal surgery.
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
Consistency is key. Weight loss is 80 percent what you eat and 20 percent exercise. Thus the foods you consume are everything. Planning is a must. It’s not enough to think about dieting and weight loss. You must make a legitimate plan of what you will eat daily, when you will eat it and what you will not eat. If you find sticking to a plan impossible, ask God or seek out a professional or a group specializing in weight and food for help and guidance. Without God, I would have no control over my weight or the foods I eat.
