Transformation of the Day: Clare lost 26kg/58 pounds. She wanted to be an active mom and keep up with her children, so she ditched her excuses and cut out sugar and processed foods. Running stairs became one of her main sources of exercise. She has transformed physically and mentally.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
My motivation was my family and my mental health. My children are very active, and I was getting to a point where I couldn’t keep up with them. I kept thinking that because I am 36 years old, maybe this is just what happens as you age. My mum was big. My aunties are big. So, that’s just how it is. However, when I decided to leave the excuses at the door, things started to happen.
How did you change your eating habits?
I decided overnight that I would give up sugar and processed foods. I thought the easiest way would be to look at what I could eat instead of what I couldn’t eat. Anything that’s in its natural form, I could eat. (i.e., vegetables, fruit, meat, nuts, legumes, etc.)
What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
I used to love running, and I work right by some stairs by a lake. So, I decided to spend 15 minutes of my 30-minute lunch break running up and down the stairs. I managed to run halfway up, and I would do this three times. Then, after work, I did the same workout with a friend. I have done this every day without fail, and I can run it well now.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 84kg/185 pounds, and my current weight is 57.5kg/126.7 pounds.
What is your height?
155cm/5’1″
When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I started my journey in May 2020, so it has taken just under five months. I can’t believe how I have changed mentally in that time.
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
I learned that the foods that I put in my mouth totally affects everything. I used to have headaches and feel tired. I haven’t had one headache the whole time, and I’m full of energy. For me, it was definitely the sugar that was ruining me.
What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
I’m not too fond of the concept that if I can do it, anyone can. No, they can’t. Do what works for your body—once you figure that out, run with it. Also, exercise is amazing but changing your eating habits is where you should start.
