Bre’Onna lost 29 pounds. Finding out that she was prediabetic was her wakeup call. This mother of four did not want to fall prey to a family history of diabetes. She tracked her carb intake and her calorie intake. She also walked 4-5 days a week for exercise.
Starting weight: 179 pounds / January 2019
Current weight: 150 pounds
Goal: 130 pounds
Height: 5’5″
What was your motivation?
Back in January, my bloodwork showed I was prediabetic. When you have a health scare, it does something to you! I knew this was happening due to having gestational diabetes during all four of my pregnancies. Diabetes also runs on both sides of my family, and I didn’t want to fall victim to that disease.
I recently found out that my prediabetes diagnosis has been reversed! All with work and no medicine.
How did you change your eating habits?
I cut my carbs down to 45 grams per day and consumed roughly 1200 calories per day. MyFitnessPal is an excellent tool for keeping track. Yes, it can be annoying, but it was essential for me. I started with 14 days of no sugar, including fruit. I also cut out bread, pasta, and rice.
After the 14 days, I continued with this, but I slowly started to incorporate fruit back into my diet. Something major for me in the past was drinking calories! I love caramel frappes and juice, so those had to go. Now I have a frappe on occasion, and the only drink I have is water. Practicing intermittent fasting has been fantastic for me being and my prediabetes diagnosis.
Tell us about your workout routine.
I walked on a track for 45 minutes to an hour, 4-5 times a week. If I couldn’t get to the track, I would/will find walking videos on YouTube or walk in my neighborhood.
Last month, my husband bought me a bike, so I’ve been taking rides around my neighborhood. It’s been 15 years since I rode a bike, and I love it. I recently did my furthest stretch of six miles. Once the gyms reopen, I plan to learn how to train using weights to tighten up and tone up.
How long did your transformation take?
It took about 3.5 months to drop 20 pounds. I’m currently down 25 pounds.
Is surgery part of your journey?
I’m not going to lie. I would love for my husband to buy me a tummy tuck, LOL. I had four kids in four years, so sure it would be nice. The reality is that it’s not going to happen. Basically, I will have to put in the work!
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
This is all new to me. I don’t expect perfection from myself, but I will at least work hard every day. When the pandemic first began, my routines and consistency started to slip. That was natural. My husband and children were home, and there was nothing to do but eat, LOL! I had to bring myself back and remember why I started. Now that Covid is slowly passing, I’m 100% back on track. My goal to lose 30 more pounds.
What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight?
Never best yourself up over slip-ups. We’re human beings living in a pandemic. Even if you’ve had to slow down your weight loss journey, keep going. If you can’t get to the gym one day, try to eat healthy. Just don’t give in to feeling like it’s not worth it!
