Transformation of the Day: Brakia lost 90 pounds. At the age of 16, she had been picked on and treated so badly that she was almost on the verge of suicide. With strength, dedication and healthy habits, she transformed her body and her mindset over the course of 5+ years. Check out her awesome story.
What was your motivation?
My motivation to lose weight kicked in at the age of 16. I was at my limit after getting picked on in high school, and was practically on the verge of suicide. People constantly looked down on me as if I was insignificant, or simply because I was fat and considered less than a person. Throughout this journey, there have been many times when I’ve felt like giving up. However,
when I look back at my pictures, realize how far I’ve come and see how I’ve inspired many other people to lose weight, that drives me to keep pushing towards my weight loss goals.
How did you change your eating habits?
I never used a specific weight loss program or plan. I started cutting out bread, sweets and fried foods altogether. Simultaneously, I increased my protein intake significantly. I had been eating more toxic, harmful, processed carbohydrates than I was eating meat and protein, so I changed that. Furthermore, I do not use or believe in diets. They only give you quick results that will not
last.
What did your workout routine look like?
When I first began working out, I started by walking outside in my neighborhood, because that’s all I could do at the age of 16. Whenever I did get a chance, I would walk 3/4 laps at a local track. Walking led to me picking up my feet, which led to jogging, which eventually led to running. In addition to this, I had old Billy Blanks Tae-bo tapes that I worked out to. I worked out between 2-4 times a day.
Starting weight/Current weight
My starting weight was 230 pounds and currently 138-140 pounds. I have never had weight loss surgery or taken any diet pills. My weight loss was all natural, through proper nutrition and exercise. My height is 5’4″.
How long did your transformation take?
I started my journey the summer before my senior year of high school, back in 2011. It took me approximately 5 years to lose 90lbs. Yes, I could’ve lost it a lot sooner. So, why did it take so long? I wanted to make sure that I could sustain the weight loss. So many people lose weight
and gain it all back, plus more!
Upon entering college, I’d already lost a total of 60 lbs. Every summer when I would come
home from college and aim for losing approximately 15-20 lbs. Then, when I was back at college, I would just sustain my weight as best as I could.
What advice do you have for other people who want to lose weight?
Consistency and dedication are key features to losing weight. You have to remain consistent in order to see results. Whether you want to feel better about yourself or you’re motivated by health reasons, you have to remain dedicated and want this for yourself. No matter how tough this journey gets or how bad the pain of exercise hurts, remain committed. Keep asking yourself, “How bad do you want it?” You also have to envision yourself in the future and go after that goal.
Lastly, patience is key, because you may not see results right away. You may even plateau and stop seeing results for a short period of time. Either way, be patient about seeing progress. The body takes time to adjust and change.
