Transformation of the Day: A’Janee lost 99 pounds. Although she grew up with confidence and high self-esteem, she struggled with her weight from childhood to adulthood. To change her life, she became a Vegetarian, practiced intermittent fasting, and joined a local fitness group. Check out her journey.
My story of obesity starts at birth! I weighed 9 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 21 1/2 inches long. I was the big baby who turned into the chubby cute little girl with a big smile. Confidence and high self-esteem were instilled in me at an early age. I was successful in school and sports. Yes, I danced, cheered, played softball and ran track and field. My after school activities and social life were a breeze. However, in the back of my mind, I always knew that I was the biggest kid in all of my groups. Being a fat kid turned into being a fat teenager, and then an overweight adult. As much as I embraced being heavyset as apart of my identity, I knew I wanted to change.
When I graduated from college in South Carolina, I weighed almost 339 pounds. Today, I stand at 240 pounds! No pills, no shakes, no surgery! My body and mind are changing daily.
How did you change your eating habits?
I stopped eating meat and did intermittent fasting. I eat my last meal before 8:30 pm and fast from then until about 1 pm the next day! I eat a lot of green vegetables, avocados, eggs, lentils, beans, and fruit. I love making soups and salads. I’ve also been using meat substitutes like Soyrizo from Trader Joe’s!
What did you do for exercise?
I work out with a small group fitness team called Tip Top Shape, Inc. based in Oakland, CA, three times a week. Our boot camp workouts are high-intensity circuit training and cardio. We also lift weights, but I try to weight train on my own once a week as well. I also like to run the lake and hills in the city of Oakland!
What is your height?
I am 5’6 1/2″.
When did you start your journey?
I started my journey in 2015/2016, and I lost 45 pounds. By the end of the year, I gained 33 of those pounds back. I joined boot camp in August 2017.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is Honesty. It’s about being honest with yourself about your goals, commitment to yourself, your actions, and behaviors. It’s not a pretty part of self-realization. Once you realize you been practicing self-sabotage by holding onto self-loathing and pity, you become angry. Then, after the anger, you get serious. After that, you get tunnel vision.
What advice would you like to share?
I’d tell any woman who is fighting for a healthier life that progress is not linear, My Loves! The path to success is not straight, and it’s not just uphill. It will take you on twists and turns that resemble the bottom, the beginning, but it’s not. Stay honest with yourself, stay true to the marathon and you’ll be fine! Results come from things you do consistently, not just when it’s convenient. Believe in yourself and do the work!
