Hello! My name is Afrah. I am a 40 year old Associate Dean of Students and the mother of a 15 year old girl. In 2019, I was in the worst physical shape of my life.
I weighed 221 pounds, I was pre-diabetic, and I had serious knee pain due to my weight and not taking care of myself. I was working and spending too many hours at work. I also didn’t cook and ate out almost daily. Fast food was my daughter and I’s best friend.
That year, I also met an incredible guy who helped me not only to lose weight but to change my lifestyle, both mentally and physically. He helped me to cook and eat the right things.
I started with a plant-based diet. In January of 2020, I went on a fast, became vegan, and walked three times a day. No sugar, processed carbs, starches, juice, meat, or dairy – just green vegetables. Fast forward to today, and I still do not eat meat. I also lift weights/exercise 4 times a week.
I now weigh 170 pounds. My goal weight is 140 pounds. By the way, I am not longer pre-diabetic and no longer have knee pain.
The biggest lesson I have learned is that my health, happiness, and relationships are my priority (and not my job anymore). My daughter also exercises daily and eats a lot less fast food.
My advice for people who want to lose weight is to keep moving forward even when you want to give up. There were a lot of days when I wanted to quit and take it easy. If it wasn’t for my friend and my daughter, who kept motivating me, I would have stopped. Now, I’m able to motivate myself. I love working out. I have made myself a priority.
