Erika lost 111 pounds. She struggled with childhood obesity and was overweight for the majority of her life. In 2014, This Delta Sigma Theta soror started improving her eating habits and lifting weights. Eventually, that led to her becoming a registered dietitian and a competitive powerlifter.
My name is Erika, and I have naturally lost 110+ pounds since May 2014. I struggled with childhood obesity and was overweight for the majority of my life. At 18, I reached my heaviest known weight of 283 pounds. My journey began with lifting weights and improving my eating habits.
I later took my journey to the next level by becoming a registered dietitian and a competitive powerlifter. My goal is to be an inspiration and provide professional help to others in their journeys.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
My health and family history continuously keep me inspired and motivated.
How did you change your eating habits?
I still eat most foods. The changes that yielded the best results;
- Completely reducing liquid calories and replacing them with water/zero-calorie drinks
- Learning how to measure and monitor portion sizes accurately
What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
My training style is focused mostly on strength training. I’ve lifted weights for the entirety of my journey with minimal cardio. I currently train 5-6 days per week, and I compete in powerlifting.
What was your starting weight?
My starting weight was 283 pounds in May 2014. I currently weigh 172 pounds.

My journey began in May 2014, and I have been consistent ever since. It’s been a total of 6+ years. I’ve been competitively powerlifting for four years.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
Discipline is more important than inspiration and motivation.
What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight
Find joyful movement, and eat foods that you enjoy because this is the journey of a lifetime. There must be joy in the process for you to reap the full, long-term benefits. Be kind and patient with yourself. Be consistent and always give yourself grace.
