I’ve been fit most of my life, but an injury derailed my workouts, and I gained a LOT of weight. Here’s my story:
What was your motivation?
My motivation was happiness. I was miserable with the extra weight. It affected everything: my spirit (I became snarky), my Achilles hurt when running, I couldn’t fit my clothes.
What inspired you to keep going when you wanted to give up?
As I started losing weight, my Achilles hurt less. I knew I had to keep going.
How did you change your eating habits?
It was a process. I hired a trainer (LaDrissa Bonivel – @superbodycoach), and she taught me about macros, micros, and how they affect our bodies.
What foods did you stop or start eating?
I was a vegan who only counted calories. I ate processed vegan burgers with fries, and protein shakes made with regular chocolate almond milk (as opposed to unsweetened). I was not consuming enough protein. I’d been a vegan for three years because I wanted to lose weight, and I gained weight instead.
My trainer pointed out my protein deficiency. I slowly reintroduced chicken and egg whites back into my diet and reduced my sugar intake. The app, My Fitness Pal, helped me track my daily goals.
What did your workout routine look like?
I used to CrossFit daily. The WODs made me strong, but the extra weight was still there. I eventually stopped doing CrossFit and hired a trainer. Best. Decision. EVER. I did resistance training with her 5 or 6 days/week, learned about eating to maximize my workouts, and the weight fell off.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 198 pounds. My current weight is 162 pounds.
What is your height?
I’m 5’7”.
When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I started my journey in late 2012. My transformation took approximately ten months.
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
I’ve had no weight loss surgand no plastic surgeries.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
I’ve learned not to merely count calories. Sugar matters. (I don’t like ice cream, but I love frozen Italian ice). Macros are not to be ignored!
What advice do you have for people who want to lose weight?
Hire a trainer. Look at it as an investment, not an expense! My trainer, LaDrissa, is worth her weight in gold!
