Transformation of the Day: Kali lost 160 pounds. She was tired of sleep apnea and getting winded when climbing stairs. For twelve months, she committed to the Keto lifestyle, eating low carb, high protein, high-fat foods with no sugar. By coupling keto with exercise and consistency, she’s achieved these excellent results.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going when you wanted to give up?
My motivation was wanting to be healthier and feel better, both mentally and physically. I was tired of struggling to tie my shoes and getting winded when I climbed a single flight of stairs. I was tired of sleep apnea. I was also literally TIRED.
As a single mother of a teenager who plays competitive basketball, I am always surrounded by athletes. However, as many parents can relate, when it comes to scheduling and priorities, Mama comes last. Finally, I made a slow decision to start Keto and change my life. Initially, I just wanted to last one week. Then, I stepped on the scale and was shocked to see that I had lost 11 pounds in 7 days with ZERO exercise. I was starting to feel encouraged, so I committed to Keto for 21 days (that’s how long studies say it takes to develop a habit). I committed to the Keto diet; low carbs, high protein, high fat, and no sugar.
Next, I started incorporating cardio and light-weight training. Twelve months later, I am down 160 pounds. Thanks to my soft-spoken metabolism, weight loss will be a constant battle for me. This is precisely why it had to be a true lifestyle change. Well, I say challenge accepted.
What does your workout routine look like? How often do you workout?
Due to the pandemic, I had to get creative. My routine includes working out at the park 3-4 times per week. I use kettlebells and jump ropes. I also do step-ups on the park bench.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 360 pounds. Today, 6/30, I weight 199.8 pounds.
What is your height?
I am 5’9″.
When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I started my journey on 6/17/2019, so the transformation has been a 12-month process.
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No surgery.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that progress is a process. I only weigh myself once per week so that I don’t obsess over the number on the scale.
What advice do you have for people who want to lose weight?
The best advice I can give to people who want to lose weight is to set small, attainable goals. Focus on a one day plan, and then a one week plan.
