Transformation of the Day: Zu lost 102 pounds with exercise and portion control. She knew that her lifestyle was leading her down a path towards high blood pressure and diabetes, so she committed to making healthy choices.
What was your motivation?
My motivation to lose weight came from my desire to be healthy. Two years ago, I weighed 307 pounds at 5’6″. I realized that I didn’t want to go down a path of high blood pressure and diabetes. That’s where I was headed with my poor diet. I’ve seen those illnesses within my family, and I didn’t want to be next.
How did you change your eating habits?
I started by switching the types of foods I consumed. Instead of fast food (food from drive-thrus, instant noodles, hot pockets, chips, and candy), I ate more whole foods packed with nutrition, like salmon, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.
Now, I’m not perfect. When I was craving something sweet, and fruit could not suppress the craving, I’d go and get a single serving candy of my choice. This helped me a lot since I wasn’t depriving myself of sweets/snacks completely. I just ate these snacks in moderation. I limited myself to one a day. Then, I worked my way to fewer and fewer snacks each week. After getting used to eating healthy food, I started to implement portion control. I began measuring out my food instead of eating until I was full.
What did your workout routine consist of?
As for working out, I make sure to stay active 4-5 or more times a week. In the beginning, I’d usually start with 30 minutes of cardio on the treadmill. I walked at a fast pace or high incline and did weight training after. Now I do 20-30 minutes of cardio, which could include jogging/sprints on the treadmill, working on the Stairmaster, or jumping rope and followed by weight training.
What is your current weight?
I currently weigh 205 pounds, which brings my total weight loss to 102 pounds.
How long did your transformation take?
My weight loss story isn’t perfect. From childhood to high school, I’ve been trying to lose weight for about ten years. There would be times where I’d lose weight and then gain back what I lost, plus more! Times got tough for me, but I had to keep pushing! I’ve fallen off track many times, but the important part is that I got right back up and kept going!
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
I also learned that staying consistent is key. You have to trust the process.
My journey is far from over, but I’m happy that this platform lets us connect and support one another’s weight loss journeys. I love to inspire and to be inspired by others.
