Transformation of the Day: LaShonda lost 20 pounds and lots of inches. After being diagnosed with gestational diabetes during two pregnancies, she changed her lifestyle to avoid Type 2 diabetes. Working out, eating clean, and avoiding processed foods worked for her.
I have tried many diets out there and had success, but I would lose the weight gain and then it back. Why? Because it was a diet. I no longer diet. I have made a lifestyle change by working out five days a week, eating clean and avoiding processed foods. I believe in balance, so I have cheat meals included in my routine as well.
What was your motivation?
Several things motivated me to lose weight. The main thing was being diagnosed with gestational diabetes during two of my pregnancies. My doctor told me I was at an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. I knew I didn’t want to have diabetes, so I decided about three years ago that I needed to lose the weight and get back down to a healthy weight.
On the days that I felt like giving up, I thought about my kids and how I wanted to be in good health to be there for them.
How did you change your lifestyle? What did you do in terms of eating habits and exercise?
I also started exercising five days a week. Initially, I walked the track while my daughter would be at soccer practice. Then I started doing the 21 Day Fix workouts at home, which was very convenient. 21 Day Fix taught me portion control through using the color-coded containers. It also taught me how to eat clean. I stopped eating processed foods altogether.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
At my heaviest, I weighed 180 pounds, and I currently weigh160 pounds at 5’4.5″. I am not where I want to be, but I am making progress so it won’t be long. Consistency is the key!
How long did your transformation take?
I lost about 10 pounds and maintained it for about a year. Then, in August 2018, I got serious and decided to stop playing around. I’ve lost a total of 20 pounds and have been maintaining it ever since. I have been on this weight loss journey for a total of three years. It has been far from perfect, but I will never quit.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
I learned not to be so addicted to the scale and to take plenty of pictures. I also started another Instagram page as a form of accountability to document my weight loss journey. I also want to motivate other moms out there and let them know they can do it too.
What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight?
Take baby steps initially so that you are not overwhelmed. Choose 1-2 things you can change regarding your nutrition. Then, begin by walking a couple of days a week. Lastly, I would tell them if you mess up, it is okay as long as you don’t quit!
