Transformation of the Day: Latoya lost 63 pounds. When her childhood friends started their transformation journeys, she decided that it was time to focus on her health too. She worked out at home and found lots of weight loss inspiration online on Instagram and in motivational quotes. She also used one of Dr. Ian’s books as a guide to change her eating habits. Check out what she shared with us about her journey.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going when you wanted to give up?
My motivation for losing weight was my health and my family. You only get one life and I needed to make sure that I did everything possible to increase my life span.
The inspiration that made me not give up was my childhood friends who started their weight loss journeys prior to me. I was also following health and weight loss pages on Instagram. Reading daily motivational quotes reminded me why I started this journey.
How did you change your eating habits?
Changing my eating habits was easy and hard at the same time! In order to change your body, you have to change your mindset. After being joked on at my cousin’s wedding and not being happy with my weight and health, I was all in mentally. I started reading Dr. Ian Smith’s book, The Fat Smash Diet, for a plan. The program lasts for 30 days and has 4 different phases that help you eat clean and learn how to correctly portion your food. During the first 9 days of this program you detox with a certain group of foods.
I stopped eating fast food and processed foods. I have started a journey to the Vegan Life (Wish me luck!). No more dairy or meat for me. It only takes 21 Days to create a habit and I did.
What did your workout routine look like?
I used Shaun T’s Hip Hop Abs and Insanity programs. I started working out 5 days a week, with 2 days off. 30 days in, I started working out 6 Days a week, with on one day of rest.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
I started this journey back in May 2014. At the time, I was at the highest weight I’ve ever been in my whole life – 200 pounds!!!! That was way to much weight for my 5’2″ frame. I lost 52 pounds within 6 months and I was dedicated to the grind.
Then, I slacked for a good 6 months last year, due to losing my brother and facing life obstacles. However, I never missed a beat and only gained 7 pounds from 2014 until 2017. I got back on track. Now, I’m more focus than I’ve ever been and I weigh 137 pounds! I never in my life thought that I would see this weight again. I feel healthy, energized and happy.
I did it all naturally – No surgeries. I am human, so I do have loose stomach skin, but I’m working on it.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
This journey has changed my life! I’ve learned that you can go to the gym everyday of the week, but if your eating habits are crappy, you are only hurting you.
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
Anybody can do it if I can. You have to be positive and know that obstacles will get in the way, but you’re stronger than that. Surround yourself with positivity and have a good support team. Start writing about your progress in a journal and create your own 21 day health focused motivational quote calendar.
