Transformation of the Day: Kiara lost 57 pounds. After months of suffering, she found out that she had an infection in her uterus which led to emergency surgery. From that point forward, she decided to go vegan, workout regularly and become more disciplined. Consistency and good nutrition have been key. Check out her transformation story.
What was your motivation?
I’ve been overweight most of my life. My main motivation to lose weight was my health. I was diagnosed with endometriosis, cysts, and an infection in my uterus after months and months from suffering. I had an emergency surgery to drain the cysts and from that day on I did my research and decided to go vegan and adapt a more plant based diet.
How did you change your eating habits?
I stopped eating meat and diary cold turkey. I started eating whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables. I also started meal prepping and planning out my meals 5 days out of the week, even down to my shakes and snacks. I eat every 3 to 4 hours and drink about a gallon of water a daily. No juice or soda. Green tea or ginger tea are my favorite go-tos.
What did your workout routine look like?
I couldn’t workout for about 6 weeks after surgery, but once I was cleared I started working out 4 days a week. At the time, I was already down 20 lbs from just changing my eating habits.
I do cardio spin classes and strength training. The elliptical and stair master are my favorites in the gym. I mostly look for inspiration on Instagram for workouts and new food ideas. I make up my own workout plans and figure out what works best for my body or the target areas I need more work on.
Starting weight/Current weight
My starting weight was 237 pounds and now I’m at 180 pounds. I’m 5 ft, 3 in tall. No surgery involved.
When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I went vegan in July 2017, so it’s been about 7 months and counting. For my ultimate goal, I would like to get down to 165 pounds and tone.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is how to be disciplined and how to say no. I remember a personal trainer telling me I needed to lose 50 pounds. I automatically said that was impossible. She asked me how long it took to gain this much weight? I said years… my whole life. She said, “Ok, so it’s going to take time to take it off as well”. At that moment, time frame didn’t matter anymore, being consistent did.
What advice would you give to other people who want to lose weight?
Consistency is key. That’s the best advice I like to give. Small changes lead up to a bigger difference over time, so just stick with it. Never give up! Also, you have to figure out what works for your body. Nutrition is key to this. I’ve worked out for years and never lost this amount of weight or kept it off for this amount of time until I fixed my daily eating habits.
