Tranformation of the Day: Tamika lost 36 pounds. Diabetes and high blood pressure could not stop her. Determined to enjoy her life, she started her journey in September. Exercising, learning how to stop eating according to her emotions and limiting her carbs to 50 grams per day worked for her. Check out her story.
I started my weight loss journey in September 2017 and I’ve lost 36 pounds. My starting weight was 235 pounds and I now weigh 199 pounds. My height is 5’6″.
What was your motivation?
My motivation came after being insulin and pill dependent to control my blood sugar. I was also dealing with high blood pressure. I am no longer on medication and my blood sugar is now controlled with diet and exercise. I have a life to live. I have a husband and children I want to enjoy life to the fullest with.
How did you change your eating habits?
I went low carb and at no more than 50 grams of carbs each day. I eliminated bread, pasta, rice and white flour from my diet. I ate more vegetables, lean meats and fish. I also had fruit in moderation. I drink no less than 96 oz of water daily, and I’ve completely cut out sodas and fruit juices. Occasionally, I’ll have something sweet, since desserts are my favorite, but I am careful not to over indulge. I create room for my occasional treats by meal prepping.
What does your workout routine look like?
I do cardio and light weight training 4-5 days a week for at least 30 minutes.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
My biggest lesson: Do not eat according to emotions. I used to eat when I would get depressed and that spiraled my weight out of control.
What advice would you share with women who want to lose weight?
My advice to other women who want to lose weight is to do it for yourself, keep a clear mentality and focus on your goal. You have to do this even though you may have naysayers or you may feel like giving up. If you fall during the course of your journey, get back up and keep going. Slow and steady wins the race!
