Transformation of the Day: Kandy lost 62 pounds. This mom of 2 just wanted to be healthier and have more energy to keep up with her boys. She adopted the low carb lifestyle, took exercise classes and changed her mindset to get results. Check out her journey.
What was your motivation?
My kids and my health concerns motivated me to make a change. I was out of breath and couldn’t keep up with my children. I looked in the mirror one day and felt absolutely disgusted that I allowed myself to get as big as I was. I weighed 245 pounds. This was the highest weight I’d ever been in my life!
How did you change your eating habits?
I used the Atkins program to start my journey. When I began this low carb program, I only ate protein and vegetables. I cut out all sugar, fruit and carbs (including, rice, pasta, bread and dairy). My meals consisted of grilled chicken and a green vegetable every night. I had red meat once a week and fish once a week. Atkins has a great free app with free recipes to help anyone stay in track.
I stuck to this lifestyle change (Phase 1 of Atkins) for 2 months. I slowly introduced fruit and nuts into my meals, but only as snacks. I slowly added in healthy carbs as well, such as ranch veggie dip. This new way of life kept me feeling full and energized, which was important because I have to keep up with 2 busy little boys. I continued with Atkins until I hit a plateau at a 43 pounds lost, so I began doing a Ketogenic diet after that. I love Keto just as much as I loved Atkins.
What did your workout routine look like?
I joined an all female gym and worked out 4-5 times a week for 30 minutes. It was a class gym, so we did everything from strength training to high intensity to aerobics in the classes. It was great!
Starting weight/Current weight
I started at 245 pounds and now I weigh 183 pounds. My height is 5’5″.
How long did your transformation take?
I began my weight loss journey in the beginning of October 2016. It took me one year to reach my first goal of losing 60 pounds. I have 30 more pounds to lose!
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
I learned how important it is to eat healthy, not just for myself but for my family!
What advice do you have for other people who want to lose weight?
Once you change your mindset and decide to do it, it will become easy! Changing the way you think about losing weight is the first battle to overcome. Once you start, keep pushing and don’t give up! Everyday will get easier!
