Transformation of the Day: Latiffa lost 66 pounds in 6 months. While dealing with her son’s battle with kidney disease, emotional eating and overeating became a way to cope. She weighed herself one day and realized that it was time for a change. Intermittent fasting and exercise are the main tools she used to get results. Check out her story.
What was your motivation?
My motivation began in April 2017 when my son was in the hospital suffering from his kidney disease. He had been in and out of the hospital for months and I began to eat my emotions. I was feeling stressed from watching my son in pain. This caused me to overeat and not care what I ate. One day I randomly decided to step on the scale and saw that I weighed 270 pounds, my heaviest weight ever. That’s when I knew it was time to change.
I was shocked and I was disappointed at myself but I also thought about my son. My eating habits effected him as well. Trying to cook him healthy meals only, and eating whatever I wanted in a separate dish was no longer going to work. I truly needed to change my habits all together. I was only 27 years old at the time, and I didn’t want to enter my 30’s overweight. I began motivating myself, not just for me but for everyone around me.
What inspired you to keep going when you wanted to give up?
I always thought about why I started and how I never wanted to see 270 pounds ever again. When I started working out, I always took pictures for comparison. I also began following other black women who were losing weight for motivation. Ultimately, sticking with it is what kept me motivated.
How did you change your eating habits?
I stopped eating fast foods and foods that are high in fat and calories. I cut out all sugary drinks. Water and green tea are the only things I drink. I began cooking at home more, and eating more fruits and vegetables.
Methods like eating 6 meals a day didn’t work for me. I would fall off each time I tried. After having so many weight loss fails, I went with something that came naturally to me. I tried Intermittent Fasting and liked it very much. I do Intermittent Fasting on the 16/8 schedule. If I eat outside of my window, I don’t get discouraged. I just extend my eating window for the next day.
What did your workout routine look like?
I started working out five days a week. I Started off with walking then jogging to running. Now I am still jogging and walking but I have added weight lifting.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 270 pounds and my current weight is 204 pounds. I am 5’7″
When did you start your journey?
I started April 2017.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
Learning to be patient was my biggest lesson. I had to realize that it took me time to gain the weight weight. Now, it’s gonna take time to lose it.
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
My advice to any others is please don’t give up. Keep pushing. Nothing is easy in life and losing weight is definitely not easy. Just remember why you started your journey. Remember to take pictures of yourself so that you can see your progress as well. Try making time in your schedule for workouts because fitness truly becomes part of your lifestyle.
