Transformation of the Day: Karen lost 53 pounds. Over the years, eating out on a regular basis and a lack of exercise took its toll. She lost and gained 20-40 pounds over the course of 20 years. More than just a diet or an exercise plan, she needed someone to hold her accountable and give her support. Check out her journey.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going when you wanted to give up?
Growing up, I had always been the biggest kid in the class, but I started to pick up more weight while working a 9-5 after college, eating out all the time and not being active. The extra weight was frustrating and I just didn’t feel good. None of my clothing fit and I didn’t feel like myself.
Flash forward to February 2016. I had joined a boot camp and I hated everything about it. The methods, the diet, EVERYTHING. At that point, I decided that I needed help. I was contemplating finding a psychologist who focused on food issues. Instead, I took a referral to Body Refined from a client who told me about the plan’s focus on lifestyle change, not just food and exercise.
When I wanted to give up, I felt compelled to stick with the plan because I had made a commitment to myself and to my coach, Kurt. We had invested way too much time. Additionally, I liked seeing the smaller numbers in the scale.
How did you change your eating habits?
I enlisted the help of wellness/lifestyle management coach Kurt Dixon of Body Refined. He designed my meal plans with specific macronutrient goals. I began meal prepping, using a food scale to weigh my food and using healthier food preparation methods. I also stopped eating fast/quick foods and making runs to 7-11. I was eating more consistent meals, with complex carbs and less red meats. I also began to eat more fresh vegetables.
What did your workout routine look like?
I was doing a lot of yoga in the beginning, added some walking and eventually began running. Resistance training became a regular component too. I ended up working out 5-6 days per week. I worked out with a personal trainer to create definition in my physique.
Starting weight/Current weight
My starting weight was 207 pounds and my current weight is 154 pounds. I’m 5’7″ and I’ve reduced my body fat by 19%.
How long did your transformation take?
I began this journey at the end of March 2016, so it’s been a little over a 1 year. I feel much better now. I don’t feel full and bloated after eating because I eat much cleaner. I sleep much better and my skin is clearer.
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Having someone that you are accountable to can be daunting at first, but it can also be the key to success. What I got from Kurt was a high level of expectation and I became motivated to exceed those expectations.
