Transformation of the Day: Kayla lost 55 pounds. She has been on a weight loss roller coaster. Before losing weight, she had to sleep with an oxygen tank and was suffering with migranes. She lost the weight with Weight Watchers and regular exercise. Then, she slipped back into her old habits and gained some of the pounds back, but she is back on track today. I love that she is sharing her mountain top experience and her vally experience, because there are ups and downs on this journey.
I’m Kayla and I am 25 years old. I have been on a roller-coaster of a weight loss journey since 2014.I am 5’6″ and my heaviest weight was about 225 pounds. After the new year of 2014, a switch turned on inside me and I decided I wanted to make a positive change.
Initially, I did a modified Daniel Fast with my church just to test my willpower. I cut out sugary drinks, fast food, desserts and carbs. At the end of the fast, I started using Weight Watchers online and used it for about a year and a half. It helped me a lot because I realized just how unhealthy a lot of foods that I had eaten my whole life were. It also helped me with my portion control because I can be a binge eater at times. One of my strengths is that I know myself, my habits and my weaknesses. If I had junk in the house I would eat junk. So, I eliminated the temptation and only kept fruits in my house to snack on when I got a sweet craving. Over time, as I gained willpower, I would treat myself and eat a kids meal or a kid’s size ice cream here and there. I learned to cheat in moderation.
I didn’t know much about working out when I started this journey, so I just focused on being active, which is what I think is most important for beginners. I went to the park any chance I got and walked a few miles. I also started to walk around my neighborhood. For about the first 6 months the only exercise I did was walking. I would walk 1-2 miles several times a week. Soon after, I got a gym membership and started to work on the cardio machines. I didn’t begin weight lifting until I started to work with my first personal trainer. By this time, I had already lost about 30 pounds on my own
Prior to beginning my weight loss journey, I suffered from severe migraines and slept with an oxygen tank next to my bed. Within a year, I had a gym membership, I’d lost 55 pounds and my migraines were gone! My smallest weight was 170 pounds and I was the happiest and healthiest I’d ever been.
When I wanted to give up, I would always think about how far I could go and what kind of results I could get if I DIDN’T quit. That’s what kept me motivated, my confidence in my own results.
Within a year of losing 60 pounds naturally, I stopped working out, fell back into my old habits, and regained about 40 lbs. This lead to some depression. I am now in a much better place mentally and on a second journey to rebuild myself even better than before! My current weight is 198 pounds. I began my second journey on January 1st 2017.
Advice: Start off with small changes and gradually add in more and more changes. Never quit. Even if you mess up, pull yourself together and keep going. The journey will not be easy or perfect but consistency is the number one way to achieve the results that you want.
