Today’s featured weight loss success story: Heather lost 45 pounds by eating clean and working out. She also notes that MyFitnessPal was very important on her weight loss journey.
She said,
“I lost 45 lbs since January 2012 by working out and eating clean. I went from 168 to 122 lbs. I started working out at the YMCA in January 4 days a week and eating a clean diet with lots of water. I cut out alcohol completely for about 6 months. It took me 10 months to reach my goal. What kept me going is my vision of what I wanted to be. I’m still working hard to maintain my new body. This is definitely a lifestyle change. The app MyFitnessPal has also been integral to my weightloss.”

Great Job. 168 is where I am now trying to get around to the 135 area. What exactly does eating clean consist of?
Heather says
Thanks everyone! @ Rita, clean eating consists of eating foods in their natural, unprocessed state. Fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, Greek yogurt, etc. When grocery shopping, try to do the majority of it around the perimeter of the store. That’s where mort of the clean, healthy food is. Processed foods, like crackers and cookies are at the center.

Great advice Heather! I use fitness pal but not as often as I should.
Rita says
Thanks for the information Heather. I will certainly focus on that when shopping.

Heather,
You have done a fabulous job of working on your health. You are such an inspiration on MFP. Way to go girl!!
Heather says
Thanks Monica! I’m still working on body fat %. That’s the next goal I’m tackling.

Congratulations! What did your workouts consist of? Did you modify your diet when you were working out by adding protein?
Heather says
Alicia, I follow a program at the YMCA called Activtrax. It is tailored specifically to my fitness goals. My goals were to lose weight and sculpt my lower body. My routine consists of running, lunges, squats and other lower bury exercises like the adduction and abduction machines. HIIT is also effective on getting those high caloric burns.
Heather says
I also eat clean 80% of the time. Lean protein, veggies, whole grains, etc.
Valerie says

Congratulations!! You look great 🙂 !!! I have a question: How did you stay focus? With so many weight loss programs and “diets” and particulars about when to eat, what to eat, how much exercise is just enough or over doing it, I end up stopping to early on because I don’t feel confident in the approach I am taking. I’m 5’7″ 180lbs and lift weights more than I do cardio (treadmil, arc, ellipical, stationary bike). MyFitnessPall doesnt track the calories I burn from weight lifting, any tips on how I can stay focused the way you have? Again congratulations, you really inspire me!
Heather says
Thanks! What kept me going was my vision of where I wanted to be. I didn’t dwell on the present. My motivation was seeing Jordin Sparks transform her body. I decided I wanted that as well. I didn’t let anyone or anything deter me from that goal. Every workout, every calories counted, was a reminder to me of where I wanted to be.
MyFitnessPal will allow you to calculate weight lifting calories under ” cardio”.
Heather says
Try doing 10 minutes of cardio to get your heart rate up, then go into strength training then end your workout with 10 minutes of more cardio. I still use this formula. It works!

Good Job
Deanna says
Great job. I’m sure seeing the results have been motivation alone to keep it off. But my question is did you ever hit a plateau where you seemed to stop losing and what did you do to break through it?
Heather says
I actually did hit a plateau at around 147 lbs. I stayed that weight for about a month. What helped me overcome that was changing up my exercise routine a little. I did more HIIT (High Intensive Interval Training). I also would have the occasional cheat snack.
Lashena says
You look great. I want to start my life change of clean eating. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get started?
Heather says
80% of the battle is nutrition. Stock up on fresh vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, Greek yogurt, almond milk, etc. Stay away as much as possible from processed foods. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily. Take a multivitamin daily. After lifting weights, I sometimes have a protein shake as a snack. Clean eating does take time to adjust to. But it is highly doable.
